Langsoond – A Shetland Yarn

Oct 4, 2022

Donna Smith’s first book Langsoond – A Shetland Yarn is a collection of 10 contemporary knitting projects inspired by Donna’s life in Burra, by the sea, the land, the people and the sheep.

Langsoond is the name of a stretch of sea that runs between the two isles of Burra: water that connects many of the crofts where the wool comes from.

The designs are knitted in Donna’s Langsoond yarn and beautifully photographed by Liam Henderson.

  1. I really enjoy your work, there’s a rhythm and natural pattern to your designs and your patterning.
I am Canadian, but my parents were Aberdonians and my father’s parents were Hebridean. Knitting was part of my whole relationship with my mother and I continue to stay involved. I’ve worked with yarn from Foula, but not the Shetlands, I guess its time to try the new yarn.

  2. Rachel Bunn says:

Hi Donna – is it possible to have a sneak preview of the patterns in your book before I purchase a copy?

    Thank you,

  3. Margaret says:

It looks like a beautiful book — and I’ve checked out the yarn on Ravelry. But I live in western Canada. The exchange rate takes the cost of the book from 20 GBP to $31 CAD, and then there’s the shipping. I’d love to buy the yarn too, but there are no stockists in Canada that I can see. I’m blessed to be able to buy locally-raised wool here — there are several producers right in Alberta — but barring being able to visit the Shetland Isles, a taste of it’s yarn would be lovely!
